The Summer Maternity Season of Bats

Animals follow somewhat strict rules when it comes to mating and survival, and it’s all dependent on the season. Winter is hibernation, as we’ve come to expect from many animals. Spring is the general mating season, and that holds true for bats as well. Summer is called something special for bats: summer maternity season.

A Summer of Pup-Rearing

This is the season where female bats are rearing their young pups until they are ready to separate and live alone. They teach their young how to hunt, how to fly, and how to seek shelter. These are the most important lessons to learn, everything else can come on its own.

Summer Maternity Season is Undefined

While it definitely takes place during the summer, there is no defined start and end date. The range changes depending on the species of bat. For example, the Mexican Free Tail Bats begin their summer maternity season in late May and end in early August, while Little Brown Bats (and Big Brown Bats) start in early June and end mid-August.

Maternity Colonies during Maternity Season

This is the time of year when most people call about having bats in their attic. Unfortunately, you’ll just have to wait until the pup-rearing stage is over and they start to leave on their own. Bats are protected by law and it’s illegal to move them once they’ve begun their summer maternity season.

Bats tend to colonize in areas where food is abundant. This includes ponds, fields, and gardens. Bats eat insects and they require a lot of them to feed the entire colony, especially their newborn pups.

Luckily, the summer maternity season is fairly short and doesn’t last the entire summer, just a month and a half or so. It may be annoying to see bats flying in and out throughout the night or hearing their little screeches through the ceiling, but your home is their home too, now! Once they’re out, call a professional to clean up the guano and disinfect their roosting area. Make sure all of the openings that lead outside are sealed or screened to prevent it from happening next year.
