How to locate and get rid of a dead opossum

Locating an animal’s carcass is not only challenging, but it’s also an unpleasant experience. Whether it’s your first time finding a dead opossum or you’re doing it for a living, the pungent smell and decaying body will always be repulsive and irksome!

A dead opossum’s body can cause multiple hazards and danger! Not only does it produce an abhorrent smell but, it transmits various diseases that can infect humans. Additionally, it attracts scavengers and predators that can damage your property and can also transmit illnesses.

Locating and disposing of the dead body is the number one priority to prevent any health concerns and structural damage to your home or building.

Finding the carcass of the opossum

#1 Search particular areas in your home

The primary indicator of a dead animal is the stench it gives off! Find the area in your home wherever the pungent smell is concentrated. You can search inside and outside of your home where animal activities are prevalent.

#2 Consider the structural design of your property

Now that you’ve identified what the smell is, it’s time to look for any holes and gaps that an opossum can fit in. Focus on finding entry points.

#3 Sniff around your home

The grosser the smell is, the closer you get to finding the body! Try sniffing gaps, walls, and floorings. Animal carcasses are usually found in hidden areas with dark lighting.

#4 Gain access to the body

After you’ve located the carcass, think really hard about how to pick it up and dispose of it. For example, if the body is located under your home, use a grabbing stick or crawl under the house to get it.
