Are skunks able to climb?
Skunks are animals that seem to be able to do everything. They are extremely good at digging, have an amazing sense of smell, and are incredible foragers. But- can they climb well? As it turns out, skunks can do this too. Read on to discover more about this, and how you can continue to protect your home despite this.
The Surprising Truth
It may surprise you, but skunks can be good climbers. They mainly rely on digging to get themselves under fences, and very seldom will climb anything. Long nails make it annoying for them to climb and their poor eyesight is a further handicap. But, despite all of this, skunks can be quite efficient at climbing. While they prefer to burrow under obstacles if they can, they will climb over fences and into trees as a means of escape. If a skunk feels threatened, it’s not uncommon for them to climb into a tree to evade their predators.
Though skunks are proficient climbers, they use this ability only as a last resort. Therefore, if you take the necessary precautions, you won’t have to worry about this ability.
What It Means For You
As a homeowner, skunks being able to climb can be a frightening prospect. Especially if you’ve dealt with a skunk problem in the past. It may seem to be impossible to deal with a skunk problem if they can just climb over your fence. However, the solution to this is simple. If you make your fence high enough, a skunk will be unable to climb over it. Although they can climb well, they don’t like to climb up tall objects. Thus, with a high fence, the skunk will get discouraged and will abandon your property. It’s also important to make animal cages and/or fences tall enough to prevent skunks from getting into them. A skunk will gladly eat pet food, but a high fence will discourage a skunk from breaking into your pet’s cages.
Should I Worry About This Ability?
The short answer is no. Skunks don’t like to climb. It may seem like a further issue you’ll have to deal with, but it’s not in reality. Adding height to a fence is the simple answer to a seemingly complicated issue. If you struggle with skunks continuing to get into your yard, consider adding height to your fence. If you find that they burrow under your fence, put the fence a few more inches into the ground. If you continue to struggle with skunks, consider calling an animal removal expert.
