What attracts snakes to my property?

There are hundreds of snake species in the US, most of them harmless. However, a few species are venomous and can cause fatal damage to yourself or your pets. Therefore, it is important to know where snakes like to reside, so you can avoid these areas, but also what attracts snakes so that you can make your property a less attractive option for them. Here are some things that attract snakes to your property:

Long grass

Long grass provides cover and is more likely to contain tasty rodents. Therefore, snakes are likely to be attracted to it. Thankfully this issue is easy to resolve with nothing more than regular mowing. If your backyard does contain areas with long grass and you want to exercise your dog, make sure to fence off the long grass so there is not a disaster.

Rock features

Snakes are more scared of you than you are of them, so they love places to hide from you and other predators. Cool, damp places are preferred, so water features, rock features, and both combined are likely to harbor snakes at some point. It is understandable that many people do not want to part with their water or rock features, but if inspecting for snakes, cool damp places should certainly be your first port of call.

Concrete that is often in the sun

Snakes are cold-blooded animals, meaning they must regularly warm their blood up manually to be able to operate. Therefore, sun-warmed surfaces such as concrete are common places to spot snakes.

Whilst it is usually impossible to remove such places, when out and about, or when gardening, be sure to be aware whenever you are in a sunny spot near some vegetation.

Wildlife hotspots

Snakes are carnivores and love nothing more than snacking on an unsuspecting rodent. Therefore, well-irrigated wildlife hotspots are heaven for hungry snakes, so extra care should be taken when exploring such places. As snakes are part of the natural environment, they are an unfortunate by-product of having a thriving community of wildlife in your backyard or nearby. We do not encourage the removal of such places, as they are hugely beneficial, but it is important to be aware of the risks that come with them. Tell-tale signs such as dismembered remains of rodents should alert you to a possible snake presence, and you should act accordingly.
