How to Remove Coyotes from Under a Porch or Shed?
With their big bodies and sharp fangs, coyotes can be a scary sight, so you sure wouldn’t want to leave your house if one was nearby. This gets tricky when a coyote decides to use your porch or shed to get away from the summer heat or to raise its young. So how do you get rid of them?
Set a Trap
While this sounds good in theory, it can be a nightmare to do properly. You’ll have to:
- Get a big enough trap and plenty of bait.
- Set it up and wait until a coyote is caught.
- Release it far enough away.
- Repeat the first three steps until all the coyotes are gone.
You might think that while that sounds bad, it’s at least doable.

Unfortunately, it’s not that simple. Before you even do anything, you need to check with your state’s laws to make sure you’re allowed to trap coyotes. You also need to make sure you can relocate and release them because trapping a coyote and releasing it involves two separate laws. Finally, you have to do all of that while geared up to protect yourself against attacks and diseases.

Also, think about all the harm you could cause by separating the parents from the children.
Be Patient
An alternative solution is to just be patient. It’s simple, easy, and cheap. All you have to do is wait because the coyotes will just leave on their own accord once the weather gets better and the air cools down. They might also leave early once the cubs are old enough to start taking care of themselves.
Yet this isn’t a perfect solution either. They might stick around for as short as a few days or as long as a few months, and you’ll constantly be at risk of being attacked or them spreading diseases during that time.
Use Repellents
Some suggest using repellents like coyote urine or mothballs. Unfortunately, these are a waste of your time and are a bad idea.
Coyote urine works in theory since it tells the intruders that the territory belongs to another coyote, but it fails in practice. Mothballs are also ineffective since they’re designed to only get rid of moths. On top of all of that, if you were going to try these methods anyway, you’d have to get close to the coyotes, and that’s a big risk.
Call a Professional
The best way to get rid of most wildlife problems is to just call a professional, and this is no exception. You’ll be saving yourself from the physical burden of the work, since you won’t be getting all the gear, setting the traps, or anything else that’s needed. Professionals in your area will also be familiar with the laws regarding wildlife, so they’ll get rid of the coyotes in accordance with your state’s rules and regulations. Finally, they have the gear, know-how, and years of experience to safely get rid of intruders without anyone being harmed. So if you’re dealing with coyotes under your porch, just call a pro.
