Are Coyotes A Threat To Humans?

Coyotes are generally nocturnal and rarely seen as they avoid contact with people. However, even though an encounter with these relatives of the canine family is a rare event, it may still happen. Coyotes can be found in urban areas more and more often, as they are expanding their territories in search of food and water sources. This means there is a bigger possibility of you crossing paths with one of them or even a whole pack. Coyote attacks on humans are uncommon, but it doesn’t change the fact that these animals pose a threat to humans.

Why Coyotes May Wander Near Your Property?

Just like any other animal, coyotes wander to new places in search of food and water sources or shelter. If you live in a bushy area or your garden offers wooden patches, it is more likely coyotes will pay you a visit to find a hiding spot.

Coyotes also feel safe under porches or sheds as closed spaces like that offer them protection. They may also search your garden for some food, such as fallen fruit, vegetables, or small rodents. Identifying why the animal has come near your property should be your first step in finding the right way of getting rid of them.

Threats Posed By Coyotes

Even though confrontations with coyotes are rare and uncommon, you should be prepared for such eventuality and understand the threats that coyotes can expose you to.

Diseases

Coyotes are known to transmit many diseases that can be contracted by both you and your pets. Some of the diseases they can carry include heartworm, mange, or rabies. They can also spread ticks and fleas that your pet can easily contract if they get in direct contact with a coyote. These animals can also infect others with distemper, parvovirus, or hepatitis. Therefore, when you notice a pack of coyotes near your neighborhood, you should take immediate action and call animal control services. Some of the disease coyotes carry can be fatal, hence why it is crucial to stay away from these wild animals and don’t let your pets near them.

Behavior

Due to their diet, coyotes may treat your cat or a small dog as its next snack. That’s why it’s crucial to not leave your pets alone outside if you know there is a coyote pack nearby. You should also remember not to leave pet food outside or any food leftovers, as it may bring coyotes closer to your house. Moreover, you should make sure your garbage area is tidy and that the trash cans are sealed properly.

Coyote Attacks On Humans

Coyote attacks on people are very rare and often preventable by modifying human behavior. Coyotes won’t attack unless they feel threatened or have rabies, although that happens even more rarely. In many incidents, people were bitten because they tried feeding a coyote or rescue their free-roaming pet that had been attacked.

Sum Up

Coyotes certainly pose a threat to humans and therefore encounters with this animal should be avoided at all times.
