Humane Ways to Remove Beavers

In many states, there are laws protecting beavers and local wildlife by either requiring you to have a trapping license or issuing significant fines for using lethal traps. Instead, there are many humane ways to remove beavers from your land.

Whether they’re eating away at your vegetable garden, destroying your beautiful vista by chowing on ornamental trees or disrupting your home comforts by stripping away your piping, beavers can be a nuisance. Trapping methods, water leveling devices, cleaning up the area, and setting up fencing are the best humane beaver prevention methods.

Humane Traps to Remove Beavers

Most humane beaver removal methods involve baited traps to catch and release beavers into a new location that won’t disrupt yours. Using a professional service, an entire colony can be taken care of in as little as one week.

If you’d like to try it out yourself, a single-door trap is best. Place it along one of the paths made by the beavers and put bait inside. Bait can be local types of wood, bark, grasses, and even fruits. It’s difficult to say what works best, so it may be a trial-and-error situation.

Once you’ve caught one, relocate it somewhere near a body of water that’s decently far away from where you caught it. You don’t want it coming back. You’ll need to do this for each beaver, but eventually, you’ll have humanely removed beavers from your area.

Once caught, you can also call local wildlife control and have them pick it up or have them give you advice on where to take it.

Humanely Remove Beavers by Adjusting the Water Level

Beavers live in bodies of water, so if you can adjust the water level then they may deem the location undesirable. Many of these devices are placed inside of a beaver dam, which can be dangerous as beavers are territorial animals. Make sure you protect yourself or call a professional to do it safely.

The pipe allows water to flow through the dam, leveling the water and defeating the purpose of their dam. They’ll likely attempt to restructure the dam, albeit unsuccessfully. Eventually, they’ll leave.

Cleaning and Fencing as Humane Beaver Removal

By cleaning up the beaver-trodden area and installing a fence, you won’t be physically removing beavers. However, they will be inclined to leave on their own accord because they won’t have access to their food and building material, and you’ve cleaned the easily accessible food and material from the ground.

Using these methods in conjunction with each other is the best way to ensure humane beaver removal. You’ll have a peaceful, beaver-free property soon enough.
