Do Chipmunk Repellents Work?

There are hundreds of products designed to scare, repel, and even kill rodents and pests, and as homeowners, we don’t have time to test each one of them out there on the market. Traps

There are two kinds of traps, a snap trap, and a live trap. A snap trap works by employing a very powerful snapping mechanism that will ultimately kill the rodent. However, there are some places where chipmunks are protected animals, so be sure to check the local laws in your area before opting for a snap trap. A live trap, however, is a more humane solution.

It works as a small trap with a weighted steel plate with bait, which will close once the chipmunk is inside, allowing you to transport them to a location far from your property. Traps are very effective, especially if you’re just dealing with a few critters. However, it’s not as effective if you already have a full-blown infestation.

Natural Repellents

One of the easiest repellents you can make at home is mixing cayenne pepper with water and spraying it in your garden or property perimeter. Another natural solution would be puréeing garlic and mixing it with hot pepper and then adding a bit of oil to make it more spray-able. Another natural repellent is essential oils, which will simultaneously keep chipmunks away and make your property smell nicer.

Simply spray oils like eucalyptus, cinnamon, lemon, peppermint, or clove around your property and in areas where you’re most worried about pests. However, be sure to keep it away from fruit-bearing trees and plants to prevent them from tasting odd. Although all-natural, this kind of repellent might not be everyone’s cup of tea, as they aren’t as effective as stronger chemical repellents.

Plant, Plant, Plant

One way to simultaneously keep your garden chipmunk-free and beautiful is to plant daffodils in your yard. This plant is actually very toxic to chipmunks, and they also have a smell that chipmunks absolutely hate. Scillia, Hyacinth, and Camassia are also a few other plants you can add to your garden to keep away chipmunks and other rodents. This can be a really great option for those of you looking to make your garden prettier, while still wanting an effective repellent.

Chemical and Electronic Repellents

Chemical repellents can be in spray form or powder form, and both work by emitting a smell that keeps chipmunks and other rodents away. However, they can get used to them, so this should not be a long-term solution. Electronic repellents work by scaring away critters, either by spraying bursts of water or by making plastic predators like owls move randomly. Again, although fun and safe, they’re not permanent solutions.

Repellents can be a great solution if you want to prevent chipmunks from entering your property, you just have to find the best one that works for you. Keep in mind that repellents are only short-term solutions, and they will not be as effective if you have an infestation.
