Are chipmunks aggressive animals?

As we all know, chipmunks are some of the cutest critters out there, but don’t be fooled by their appearance as these guys are actually quite unfriendly! They tend to stay in the wild and only venture into human territory when in search of food. When you spot a chipmunk in your garden, it’s best to leave them alone for if they feel threatened, this will set off their “fight or flight” mode, making them extremely dangerous should they choose to fight.

When under stress and have opted to fight, chipmunks have a tendency to bite and scratch their opponents. This usually happens when people try to carry or touch them, which is why it is best to avoid contact with these critters, despite how cute they may seem. Not only are chipmunks capable of biting and scratching you, but these guys are also known to have the possibility of carrying diseases. They can then transmit these bacteria ad pathogens to you through physical contact or through bites.

Some of the well-known diseases they can carry are Lyme disease, plague, and rabies. There are some cases in which chipmunks can find their way into your attic or wall voids as they search for food. If this happens, there is a chance that they will leave chew marks on the places they have been in.

The reason for the constant chewing is that these guys never stop teething, meaning they constantly need to bite on something. This also adds to the strength of their bite, making it quite the experience to get bitten by one. The chew marks could also cause fire hazards to your home.

Chipmunks are also known to be very territorial, so when they see predators or unknown creatures entering their territory, they tend to take safety measures. One way they do this is by making a distinct noise, this is their iconic “chuck” noise. If you hear this while you are out and about, it is best to vacate the area as soon as possible. When you hear a “chit” sound however this means that you have startled a chipmunk, and as such you should best be on your way since it may retaliate violently.

So, although not really aggressive, it’s still a smart move to call in an expert when attempting to remove a chipmunk from your premises. An expert would know how to properly and safely remove the critter from your area with ease, without you or any of your family members getting bitten.
