Can foxes be good pets?
Foxes have cute features that make them look like the perfect pet. They have, in most cases, been mistaken for dogs, for example, the Shiba Inu. Once you come across a fox, the thought of keeping it in your home as a pet may arise. But even if they are cute looking, you need to take all the precautions necessary before domesticating a fox. The best way to domesticate a fox is by raising it while it’s still young. A young fox is easier to train. The training should be like that of a dog to ensure that all the wild qualities do not appear. From first meeting the baby fox to when it is fully domesticated, you should ensure you keep the relationship strong.
Once properly domesticated, foxes make very good pets. They not only look after your homestead but they can also protect your children, pets, and property.
Steps for domesticating a fox
Since a fox is a wild animal, following the right steps will ease the process of domesticating it for you. Here are the processes of domesticating a fox:
Capturing it

This being the first step, you should ensure that you use a humane way. And while in the process try offering a friendly environment for it. You should also ensure that the little fox feels safe in your presence. Start building a good relationship with it once you have captured it. This will help make sure that it feels safe in your presence.
Vaccinating and deworming
Foxes carry infectious diseases that may be harmful to your loved ones and you. So as soon as you capture it, you will need to get it vaccinated so that it can be free from diseases. Since the transition is huge, deworming it is a great way to ensure that the fox will not fall sick. Ask your veterinarian to recommend the right antibiotics if it does get sick.
Be its teacher
A fox needs to be shown how to behave in the presence of other people and also in all situations. Properly training may be a good way to instil this knowledge since you have already developed a good relationship with the fox. You can begin with simple commands that you would teach a dog such as, sit, stay, etc. To make the learning interesting for the fox, use treats to motivate it.

Please note: A full-grown fox is the last animal you should try to domesticate. They are already adapted to the wild and their wild behaviours are hard to change.
Be sure to check if it’s legal to domesticate wild animals in your state to avoid complications. More so, domesticating a wild animal may require your patience, so be sure to devote your time to the animal.
