How to get opossums off of my roof

Every so often, possums will find their way onto your roof and into your home. They are great climbers, and this skill is mainly attributed to their opposable thumbs. Normally, females will find a safe place to stay once they give birth.  When you spot a opossum on the roof, in most cases, it is a possum that is looking to stay in your attic. When in the wild, the possum prefers to live in hollow trees or in burrows dug by other animals. However, considering that an increasing number of opossums are opting to live alongside humans, they are highly likely to convert your roof into their new home. Once they make their way into your home, removing them can prove to be troublesome. However, by following the guide provided below, you will be able to get rid of them effectively.

1). Try to entice the opossum to live in an area of your property that is favorable to you. This can include something as easy as attaching a nest box to a tree at the edge of your yard. This way, the opossum will have an alternative home, and this method has proven to be effective for most people.

2). Inspect the space within your roof to find out where the opossum has created its nest.

Once you’ve found it, remove it and put everything in the new nest box. By doing this, the opossum will be forced to follow its own scent and establish a new home in a place that you prefer.

3). Make sure that the nest box is between 4 to 5 feet above the ground. This will help to  make the opossum feel and be safe and secure against predators and other animals, particularly your pet cat or dog.

What to do if the possum on your roof finds its way into your house, and the attic?

What you need to do first is to inspect the top area of your house to find out the entry points for these creatures. It can be easy to assume that everything is okay, but the possums could be using even the smallest holes to gain entry into your home. After you have identified these holes, close them. This way, you will be able to avoid these creatures and other unwanted wild animals from entering your home.

After you’ve done this, check around your home to discover how the opossum is managing to get to the top parts of your home. You might find that there is a tree branch leading up to your roof or fencing panel that is giving the possum easy access into your home. These creatures are excellent climbers and jumpers; hence, by addressing these factors, you will make it more difficult for the possum to get into your home.

There is a wide range of repellents and deterrents available on the market. You can also use lighting to discourage the creatures. However, most deterrents and repellents have been found to be ineffective while lighting doesn’t work all the time.

One recommended technique is to use a strong disinfectant to get rid of the animal’s scent. Opossums and other creatures often rely on their scent to recognize familiar surroundings. Hence, when you remove this scent, the animal will become confused and leave.
