Humane ways to kill an opossum

Opossums are one of the most vicious and scary animals that can bring destruction to yourhome by causing property damage and transmitting multiple diseases.

Opossums can live everywhere, in densely populated cities and rainforests. They are built to thrive and survive in most types of environments whether rural or urban. Because of this, they are to blame for damages to farmlands where crops and vegetation are shredded to pieces – triggering some farmers to get rid of them by any means.

Many people who have dealt with this problem resorted to trapping. This is an effective way of controlling their population. Though we may be eager to get rid of them completely, these animals can feel pain too! Besides, not all people are okay with killing nuisance animals. A fast and simple method is the key to killing them without causing them to suffer.

Here are three (3) ways to kill an opossum inside a cage:

#1 Shooting

The most humane and effective way to kill an opossum is to shoot it behind its head but, there are some factors to consider with using this method. This is not an option if you’re living in urban areas and closed settlements because it can cause some serious trouble to you and people living near you.
You have to make sure that you have the proper documents and license to avoid any complications with the law. You also have to be cautious in handling a firearm because if you fire at a hard surface, the bullet may ricochet and harm someone!

#2 Strike the opossum in the head

It’s just as effective as the shooting method but it requires the killer to have enough strength to ensure the strike will stun and instantly kill the opossum. A hammer, wooden board, or a steel bar will do the job.

Take note that aiming for the head will guarantee an instant kill. It’s best to restrain the opossum before doing the job. If you’re doubting that the animal is not dead, cut through its throat to avoiddeath due to blood loss which is very agonizing and painful.

#3 Be put down by a vet

This option may be expensive compared to the other methods but euthanizing the animal with the help of a veterinarian is a great way to put them down without causing them pain and stress.
