Humane ways to kill a nuisance raccoon

You may have already tried getting rid of the raccoons again and again, but they keep coming back no matter what you do. You might also just think that the best way of getting rid of a raccoon is a permanent one. Either way, you’re here looking for a way to kill the poor critter. There are plenty of ways to kill a raccoon, but many are inhumane and cause the animal unnecessary harm. Some may even have unexpected side-effects that could make your life harder. So let’s explore some ways in which you might permanently get rid of the raccoon in a decent and humane manner.

Lethal Grip Traps

This method of killing raccoons has been around for a very long time. It involves setting up a trap, complete with triggers and jaws. The set-up process for this can be quite complex, so you may need to consult an expert when setting it up. It’s a good idea to set these up in a place you are sure the raccoon will pass through, such as a small opening or exit, to ensure they’ll get caught.

Then once they step on the trigger, it’ll cause the device to fly into action and cause the jaw to come down on the raccoon. When this happens, the sudden and quick force of the jaw will instantly kill the creature and will give them a fairly painless death.

Shooting

Shooting a raccoon when they’re free to move about on their own can prove to be quite a challenge, because of how quickly these critters can react. As a result, it’s probably a good idea to set up a trap to catch them first. Feel free to use any method you know to cage the animal, such as by baiting the animal with corn or some other vegetation they like.

Once you’ve caught them and have them at hand, it’ll be hard for them to move, so you can give them a fairly quick and painless death by shooting them in the right spot.

Just make sure that your state allows you to use a gun and to kill a raccoon before you attempt this. Also, be sure to keep your distance as their blood can carry diseases.

Euthanasia

This is possibly the best and most humane way of killing a raccoon. You can first trap them as mentioned before. Once you have them caged, you can take them with you to a vet or a professional animal trapper to have them euthanized. This typically involves carbon dioxide chambers or even a serum injection which provides a painless death to the animal.

With that, you have some ways in which you can kill a raccoon humanely. There are plenty of nonlethal approaches to take when you want to get rid of a raccoon, and it’s recommended you attempt those first. If that doesn’t work, you can attempt some humane methods of getting rid of them. But no matter what happens, avoid drowning or poisoning raccoons as both are incredibly inhumane, and poisoning can help spread disease and puts any pets you have at risk.
