HOW TO KEEP MICE OUT OF YOUR YARD OR GARDEN
Finding mice traces in your garden is always an unpleasant surprise. These rodents can be a huge nuisance and if they feel comfortable in your backyard, there is a big chance they will soon move inside your house. Mice tend to move indoors during autumn and winter, so if you notice mice activity in the months before the cold arrives, you should definitely take the proper steps to keep mice out of your garden, as it is very likely they will try to get inside your house in the coming months. Moreover, their activity in the garden doesn’t come unnoticed. These rodents feed on plants and damage the leaves and roots by chewing. They also spread diseases and infections, leave feces behind, and can damage any wooden structures you have near your property. In this article, we discuss the best ways of keeping mice out of your yard and therefore preventing a rodent infestation.
Inspect Your Fence
This action should be at the top of your to-do list when you are inspecting your garden and yard and planning to make it rodent-free. Maintenance of your fence is crucial in the fight against most pests. We recommend carefully inspecting every part of the fence in search of any holes and gaps – remember that mice can squeeze through really small spaces, so make sure to fix even the tiniest of holes! If you are just planning on installing the fence, we suggest researching the right materials (metal, wood, mesh, or barb-wired fences for example) and setting it deep enough so that the pests can’t dig underneath it.

Keep Your Lawn Trimmed
Mowing your lawn regularly should already be on your list of housework, but if it’s not then making sure to add it! Tallgrass is a great hiding space for mice as it allows them to run around your garden unnoticed.
Keep Your Garden Clean & Tidy
This is a crucial point in the fight against any kind of pest. Mice thrive in messy, cluttered environments as they offer them safety and shelter. Making sure that dead leaves, cut grass, or piles of wood are disposed of is the first step to preventing a mouse infestation. You can either get them out of your garden completely or create a special compost pile, which then should also be secured – otherwise, it may tempt mice to come to your garden again.
Remove Food Sources
Mice venture to your yard in search of shelter and food. We’ve already suggested the steps you can take to reduce potential shelter places, and now it’s time for another important action plan. It’s essential to not leave any leftover food in your garden (for example after BBQ or dinner is eaten on the patio). You should also remove uneaten bird food and pet food, and not leave it
exposed for too long. Remember to take care of your garbage can area, as it can bring mice near your property. Make sure that trash cans are sealed properly, for example with a lid that locks.
