How can I modify my property to keep mice away?

Mice are not something that you want to allow on your property; they will damage your home and bring all types of diseases with them when they move in. They love to make homes in barns where domestic animals are fed, and they like to venture inside your home as well. When they get there, they will chew and destroy anything from your favorite antique chair to the wires that run to your lights. There are a few ways that you can modify your property to keep mice away.

How they can get into your home and barns

Openings – you want to look around your building and your home for any signs of a hole, even if it is a little hole where your cables run into your home. This is sometimes all a mouse needs to get into your home. If the hole is too small, the mouse will chew to make it larger to suit their size.

Windows – You like to have windows in your building for proper ventilation. The window
frames are an easy target for mice if they are not installed properly. Make sure the windows fit tight and they are sealed up around the edge for a good strong fit.

Mice Removal From Property

Smells – mice are attracted to smells of food. They will hunt all day long for their food source. If you store your animal’s food in the barn or building, you will want to keep the food in a metal bin to eliminate the smell of the food lingering in the air. The same thing goes for your home; you will want to keep the food in containers that a mouse cannot chew through. It’s hard to find a way to store food in your kitchen that can keep a mouse out, but you need to do whatever it takes to keep them out.

Trim trees – When a tree branch hangs low or close to your building or home, a mouse can use it to get on the roof of your home or building and enter underneath the eves of the roof.

You can always count on mice to enter your home when the weather begins to grow cold outside. They scurry around to find shelter for the winter and have their babies close to a food source so they can not only weather the winter in your home, but they can eat well too.

Don’t assume that mice are gone or are not around you because this isn’t true. Mice are fast breeders so they will always have babies and those babies grow up and look for their own homes.

Keeping mice out of your buildings and homes is going to be something you must stay on top of. You want to ensure that you do a building inspection with every change of the season so you can make sure that your home or building is mouse-proof.
