Different ways to trap a squirrel

For many of us, squirrels are not just a novelty we see when walking through a park or your local neighbourhood. To some, squirrels are a true menace, getting into places both dangerous for their own safety as well as causing serious damage to your property and transmitting various diseases. To remove these animals from places they shouldn’t be, there are a variety of trapping methods available. The method you choose can come down to the particular location the trap must be placed. Let’s get into the various trapping methods out there.

Tunnel Traps

This trap is different from repeater traps in the final outcome where the squirrels are concerned. While the repeater trap simply holds the squirrels until they can be let free elsewhere, the tunnel trap usually ends lethally. This trap is mounted between two branches which you have seen the squirrel use regularly. You then place a tunnel-like connection between the two. There is then a lethal trap hidden within said tunnel. This method can be utilized for any place squirrels are seen crossing regularly, not just trees. This trap is only truly effective against one squirrel, unlike repeater traps, this tunnel variant cannot deal with a multi-squirrel problem.

Squirrel Trap

Bird Box Traps

This trap is used when your problem is with squirrels in the trees near your area of concern. This trap is therefore placed within or on a tree.

To put it simply, the trap is once again, a wire mesh within which you bait the squirrel with something like nuts or berries. Once a squirrel enters the trap for said bait, it will hit a trigger that will kill the squirrel. This, like the tunnel trap, is also a one squirrel trap but is more suited to being reset and placed in the same place as the bait will act as, well, a bait.

Single Cage Traps

This is the classic trap, one used for almost every small animal. The trap itself is rather big and conspicuous compared to the other traps on this list, for this reason, squirrels can often spot the large metal box and avoid it out of rightful fear. Therefore, many have taken to hiding the side panels of the traps or obscuring them with leaves, bushes, and grass, leaving only the front of the trap exposed. The bait is then placed in the trap waiting for the squirrel. When this trap is utilized, one must make sure that the trigger is at the right sensitivity level, too quick and you will miss your squirrel, too slow, just the same. Secondly, you must make sure that the trap you’re planning to use is big enough to capture the entire squirrel, tail and all.
