Tips to Keep Chipmunks Away from Your Yard
As we all know, chipmunks are quite adorable creatures. However, this only hides the fact that they are actually aggressive towards things they perceive as threats and are quite a nuisance when they have invaded your home. As such, we need to find ways to keep these critters at bay. Here are some ways by which to keep chipmunks away from your yard.
Install a Fence
Having a fence is a great way to keep these critters away from your home. The fence needs to have a fine mesh, which should be somewhat stronger than that of the mesh used for chickens. The fence has to be beneath the ground as well as above it in order to keep them out, and it’s best to bury it at least 6-inches below ground.

Fences, however, might not be as effective because determined critters and vermin seem to always find a way to get through, especially through the holes found near the entrance. One way to prevent this is to regularly check your fence for holes and damage.
Time to Spice Things Up
Spices that have a strong odor are good deterrents against chipmunks. Examples of strong spices are hot sauce and garlic, which can be puréed and turned into a spray repellent. If your garden also has some of these spices, there is a chance they’ll leave as soon as they smell it. One sure way for this method to work is to mix and mash 10 garlic cloves with a cup of hot sauce and a pint of vinegar.

Let the mixture sit for a few days and mix it with your plants via a spray bottle, then reapply the mixture if it rains. Be sure not to spray them near fruit-bearing trees and plants so that you can still eat them. Take caution in spraying them around areas your dogs and children play in to prevent any sort of accidents.
A Hairy Solution
When these critters smell a human nearby, they generally don’t want to be within the area. As such, one of the best ways to keep chipmunks at bay is to litter the area you want to be protected with your hair. This will cause them to mistakenly think your hair is you, making them want to avoid the area because they don’t like humans. This solution might not be for everyone because, well, who wants to spread human hair around their property, right?
Caffeine Time
Coffee grounds are one of the things we humans enjoy, and these critters despise. Given that knowledge, littering your yard or garden with coffee grounds will be a good way to keep chipmunks out, without having to make the area look nasty or having it smell rancid. Simply sprinkle coffee grounds unto the area and you should be set.

Not only do the coffee grounds help keep a garden safe, but they are also actually a good form of compost, making your plants healthier while keeping it safe from danger. Not to mention, smelling coffee is one way to liven you up!
