Vole Prevention
Because they are small in size, voles can wreak havoc in your backyard without you noticing early enough. The best way to fight them is by preventing them from creating runways in your property. Don’t wait until you see the damage voles have created in your yard before taking action against them. There are a few steps you can take to ensure that you prevent voles from invading and damaging your beautiful yard. Here are some of them.
Clean Up Your Yard
Cleaning up your yard, apart from keeping it looking clean, will also help to keep rodents away. Cut the grass and ensure that you keep it short all the time because overgrown grass is a great hiding place for voles. When the grass is short, they will avoid your yard because they will be visible to anyone passing through the grass.
Ensure that you remove any pile of wood, debris, leaves, clutter, weeds, and grass that accumulates in your yard to keep it clear and clean. Even after cutting grass, and raking your yard, do not let the pile build up or stay in the yard for a long while. This is because the voles will find it easy to hide in the debris.
Trim bushes and keep them clean from the ground, and do not let them overgrow, especially to the ground. Ensure that the roots are clean enough so that you can see if there is anything on the ground.
If you have a bird feeder, ensure that you remove any accumulated birdseed from the feeders because the seeds also attract voles to the yard.
Use Rodent Repellents and Vole Poison
This is one of the most effective methods used to prevent voles from damaging yards. However, you must be consistent when you are using repellents. Consistent application means that you should use the repellent after every few weeks so that you are sure that they will stay away from your yard all the time.
Repellents are available in liquid and also granular form so choose the one you find easiest to use. Ensure that the yard is still clean and you have taken out all the piles of weeds and grass before you spray the yard. This way you will be sure that there are no places for the vole to hide.
Ensure that you follow all the instructions carefully so that you can be effective in the prevention. Be careful when using chemicals because they can kill your grass and bushes.
Protect Your Trees
Voles will damage your trees, especially when they are still young, and you need to be sure that you protect them. Wrap the tree trunks with setting wire mesh or a hardware cloth but leave enough room around the tree so that it can continue growing.
Before you decide on harsh methods to keep voles away from your yard, ensure that you have tried all you can to keep them out of your yard. The only way to do this is by keeping a neat-looking yard and removing any piles of debris from the yard.
