What Are Some Ways to Kill a Chipmunk?

Let’s face it, chipmunks are pests. They are members of the rodent family who burrow and dig their way through the ground on your property. They leave ugly holes on your lawn and garden. They attack the flowers and vegetables that you work so hard to cultivate. They loosen the soil and kill the roots of your plants. They burrow under the foundations of your house and other buildings, weakening them and threatening the stability of your home. They sometimes even manage to find their way into your house. That is definitely something you don’t want.

The fact is, the chipmunks have to go. You need to deal with them. So, how do you go about it? When it comes time to do some pest control and kill a chipmunk, what is the best way to go about it? In this article, we will explore some ways to kill a chipmunk.

Get a Cat

Cats are great hunters. We all know that cats are great for keeping down the rodent population. Usually, people think that means mice and rats but it also means chipmunks. Cats will hunt other animals on your property, such as birds and chipmunks. A good cat could go a long way toward getting rid of problem chipmunks.

Use a Bucket of Water to Drown Them

One very handy way to kill chipmunks is drowning them. To do that, simply fill a bucket with water and prop a piece of wood that the chipmunk can climb. Then scatter a trail of seeds around the bucket that leads to the wood. Be sure to scatter a couple of seeds on the wood and a couple on the water. The seeds will need to be dry in order to float on the water. The chipmunk will follow the seeds up the wood and into the bucket. There they will drown.

Get Yourself a Gun

The option of shooting the chipmunks might seem like an unappealing on, but it is actually more humane than some other methods. It certainly takes guns and ammunition (which you should obtain legally) and a good aim. You should never use a gun without the training and skills required to use it safely. You also have to be very careful that there are no other people or animals around to be harmed by an accidental stray shot. Safety should always come first. Use seeds scattered around to lure the chipmunk out in the open and take your shot. It is an instantaneous death and the chipmunk won’t suffer.

Use a Deadly Snap Trap

There are a number of lethal snap traps on the market. Snap traps lure the chipmunk in with bait. Chipmunks love grains and seeds. Raisins, sunflower seeds, pumpkin seeds, nuts, and peanut butter all make great bait for your traps. Don’t try to set the trap right away. Leave the bait out for at least three days and let them get used to it.

They will be comfortable with the traps and then you can set them. In order to make the traps effective, you should study the chipmunks and figure out their patterns of movement. Then place the traps in those routes. The snap trap closes in on them and instantly kills them.
Note: You should never attempt to poison chipmunks. It is an inhumane way of killing them and it is potentially lethal to children, pets, and other animals.
