What attracts mice to your property?

If you are dealing with a mouse infestation there are probably a number of questions floating through your mind. How am I going to deal with this? What kind of damage are they doing? How did they get in?

Another question you may have could simply be why do mice go into houses? The answer to this is quite obvious if you think about it. They want to be in a house for the same reasons that you do!

Mice, like any creature, are just trying to fulfill their hierarchy of needs. Just like you, they desire a stable residence they can rely on to provide them safety from other creatures and the elements.

Your home is likely the safest place a mouse could ever live, at least until you find them and deal with the infestation.

Now, there are some reasons they may have picked your home over others. Here are a few of the reasons why your home may have been the most attractive:

  • Your food was easily accessible
  • You left food in containers that do not have lids and allow the scent of food to leave them
  • Your garbage outside is not properly secured and attracted them to your property
What Attracts Mice

These are just some of the reasons that a mouse could have picked your home to set up shop. Luckily, these are all easily changed with just a few simple purchases. Find a new garbage can with a locking mechanism to use, and buy Tupperware (or better, metal and glass) containers to keep your food locked away. This should help to prevent any creature from thinking there is an easy source of food inside of your home.

Another option to dissuade mice from your property is to keep your yard neat and clean. If you have piles of things around your yard you are going to want to clean them up. These can look like a great home to many pests. Make sure there is no garbage left out without being placed in your garbage can.

If you follow these steps, your home will look less homey to mice and other animal intruders that could get in.
