Mice are great survivalists that can adjust to almost any type of environment and weather. They can find food and water sources even in the scarcest places and they can discover safe spots to build nests in just about anywhere!
Mice’s best weapon is their extremely tough teeth that can chew on almost anything! Paper and clothes are given. But the list of materials prone to mice chewing goes on and on. Here are some materials and objects that mice can chew through.
Wooden objects
Houses are commonly made up of wood. Most furniture and fixtures are also made up of wood. It doesn’t matter if the material used is hardwood, mice can still chew through it. It’s only a matter of time. If you have mice in your house, watch out because they might just break into cabinets and drawers.
Plastic
Those ever-reliable plastic containers that you use to store food are one of the major targets of mice. Just like with wood, it doesn’t matter if the plastic material is a little thicker than most – mice can still chew through it in a matter of days. If one night is not enough to do the job, they will surely come back the next night to finish it.
Drywall
This material is widely used as inner walls in the majority of structures. Drywall is made up of gypsum and its 2 outer layers are made of paper. These paper materials allow mice to easily penetrate through. In a matter of hours or days, they will eventually reach the gypsum which can damage the interiors of your wall. Watch out because once the mice weaken the structure of your wall, it can result in an accident that can cause serious injuries.
Concrete
Yes, you read that right. Mice and their tiny teeth can chew through hard concrete. This material is supposed to be impenetrable by rodents but the problem is that most concrete mixtures are not properly cured during construction which makes it weaker compared to fully cured concrete. Only concrete that has been cured for more than 3-7 days is mice-proof.
Fibreglass
Fibreglass is a favourite material among mice! After they’ve chewed it to pieces, its remnants can be used in building their nest. Buildings that have fibreglass walls should be regularly checked for mice infestations to avoid any structural breakdown.
Expanding foam
This is a handy material that is usually used for patching up damaged walls and small openings. Contrary to popular belief, expanding foam can easily be chewed through by these gnawing machines. Expanding foam may block possible entry points of unwanted rodents but it can only work temporarily. If you are using this material to keep rodents away, you should be looking for a more permanent solution.
Pipes
Pipes are usually hidden between the walls and underground that’s why a homeowner wouldn’t know that there are mice living in their plumbing pipes and sewers. Even though pipes are made up of steel, mice can still chew through it. Given that it’s hidden from plain sight, mice have all the time in the world to chew through it undisturbed until they finally get through.
