Tips to Keep Rats Out of Your Garbage
No one wants rats in their home, but they will try and get in if your home is tempting enough. Garbage cans are a good point of entry for them. If they can get into the cans, they will use them to move into your house through the foundations or any cracks in the wall. Here’s how to secure your garbage and keep those rats out.
Close the Lids
Firstly, if you don’t have any garbage cans with lids, now is the time to go ahead and get some. Rats will try their luck with garbage cans, as they’ll be able to smell any food that’s inside them. If the lid is on and closed tightly, they’ll see that they can’t get in and leave. Also, check for any holes or breaks in the can, as rats can get in that way too. If there are any holes, it’s time to get new garbage cans.
Empty the Cans On Time
The longer your garbage sits out in the garbage can, the more tempting it is to rats. You need to ensure that the cans are being emptied regularly, to reduce the risk of rats getting inside. Make sure you know when your trash pickup day is, and ensure your cans are at the side of the road ready to be emptied on that day.
Choose the Correct Placement for Your Garbage Cans
Where you place your garbage cans is important. If they’re too close to your home, rats can move on from the can to your home itself through even the tiniest of gaps. Then, you’ll need to handle the different problem of rats being in the house.

Try and place the cans as far away from the house as you can, as rats won’t want to move in the open to get to your house if they don’t have to.
Wash Your Garbage Cans
Something you may not have considered is washing your garbage cans. The longer they’re left unwashed, the more potent they will smell to rats in the area. When they’re empty, hose them down or use a power washer to get them clean, ready for the next garbage collection day.
Remove as Much Garbage as Possible
In some cases, it will be difficult to fit all garbage into your garbage cans. For example, if you’re doing home renovations, you’ll be dealing with a lot of waste. The more that’s on your property though, the easier it is for rats to hide and shelter. Try to remove as much of it as you can when you have an excess amount of garbage. You can make regular trips to dispose of it elsewhere or purchase a dumpster to place everything inside. These can be sealed, keeping the rats out.
Garbage cans are a bigger draw to rats than you would think. If you want to keep the rats out of your home, you’ll need to keep the cans as empty as possible, wash them often, and make sure to keep them away from your home.
