Keeping mice out of your garbage
Finding your garbage all scattered and chewed on by mice is never a good thing. Aside from the additional cleanup work, it exposes you to diseases that can be transmitted through mice waste. If you have mice regularly paying your garbage can a visit, there are effective ways for you to prevent this from happening again. Check out these tips and techniques.
1) Empty your garbage can every day
Maintaining cleanliness is always your best line of defence against mice. These creatures feed on dirty piles of stuff every chance they get. They don’t care about the smell or ickiness, as long as they know there’s food, they will jump right in.
Mice are nocturnal animals which means they are out and about at night and are mostly inactive during the day. Emptying your garbage every day prevents mice from going through your trash and making a mess out of it while you are sound asleep.

Make it a habit to empty your garbage can daily and give mice one less reason to hang out in your property.
2) Use sealed garbage cans
Even when you take out your trash every day, there’s still a smell that lingers in the can. This is enough to entice a group of mice. By using a sealed garbage can, you can make sure that there’s no way these tiny rodents will make it inside. This usually discourages them from coming back. Sealed trash cans will also contain the smell and prevent mice from being tempted to give it a try.
3) Keep your backyard neat and tidy
Mice love hanging out in dirty and dark spaces. They find it hard to resist when you have a messy backyard especially if you have rotten fruits that have fallen from a tree in your yard scattered all over. The same happens when you have crops and other open food sources lying around.
By keeping your backyard clean, you will give no reason for mice to come and pay you a visit. Keep in mind that mice are excellent foragers and while they have a terrible sense of sight, they have a sharp sense of smell. So if you want to keep mice away from your yard, don’t just get rid of the mess that you see but also get rid of spoiled food lingering in the hidden corners of your property.
4) Fence them out
Mice almost never give up. As long as they see a way to get through, they’ll do whatever it takes. If you are serious about keeping mice from messing up your garbage, fencing them out might be the best solution for you. This strategy is a level up from the earlier mentioned ones.
Obviously, this involves more work and money especially if you do not already have a fence around your property. However, if you already have it, make sure to look for holes and entry points. Pay attention to gaps and cracks and repair them immediately to prevent mice from getting in.
