Do Sound or Light Repellents Deter Squirrels?
Squirrels are a common home pest, especially in places like your attic that are mostly undisturbed. It’s easy for them to get in and start rearing their young, but you want them out. Aside from the noise they create, they pave the way for more pests, cause damage to your home, and are a carrier of diseases.
Lots of homeowners want to remove squirrels humanely, and so they look to methods like using lights or sounds to convince them to move out. They sound good in theory but do they work in removing the squirrels from your home?
Removing Squirrels with Lights
Some homeowners choose to use lights in order to convince squirrels their attic is a bad place to be. Some people say simply leaving the light on in the attic is enough to annoy them and get them to leave. Others say that using a strobe light is best. These are designed to flash around 90 times a second and annoy the squirrels so much that they leave.

The problem is that these aren’t enough to make the squirrels leave. Leaving a light on, or using a high-intensity light often isn’t annoying enough and the squirrels get used to it. If there’s a strobe light, they may move from the attic but just end up somewhere else in your home. Either way, they’re not going to leave because of lights.
Removing Squirrels with Sounds
Another often recommended method for removal sounds. Again, the idea is to be so annoying that squirrels will leave. These devices emit a high pitched frequency that’s within a squirrel’s range of hearing, around 25,000 Hertz, and will irritate them.
The problem with these is, as with the lights, is that many squirrels just put up with the noise.

They can cope with a lot you throw at them as your attic is such a good nesting spot. Another problem is that these devices are within most pets, hearing range too, so they’ll bother your furry friends. You’ll also find that the sounds made by these devices are weak at best, so they’ll be blocked by walls or corners.
Just like the lights, if the squirrels do find this annoying, you’ll see that they simply move elsewhere in the house rather than leave entirely.
How to Remove Squirrels Humanely
If you want to get rid of squirrels without harming them, then you’ve probably already tried these methods, or at least looked them up online. The problem is they’re just not that effective. How are you going to get them out humanely?
The best way is to talk to a wildlife control company about removing them.

They will have humane methods, such as live traps, that will catch the squirrels and get them out of your attic. They’ll also be able to find where they have been getting into your home.
This is key, as you can then seal up that hole when the squirrels are gone. Once you’ve done that, you shouldn’t see any more coming in.
