Is Trapping Bats Legal?
The answer here is most commonly no. In many states in the U.S.A, bat trapping is illegal, even if they are inside of a building. This law is beneficial for both people and bats as it keeps both safe. It is also important that bats are protected because they are a key factor in keeping many environments healthy.
Nets Are Not For Catching Bats
Many species of bat are small and agile, making it difficult to catch them safely. Nets are often impractical especially when there are mass numbers of bats that need to be removed from a building. Not only are nets ineffective, but they can harm the bat if their fragile bones hit the metal frame of a net or if they get entangled and are not eventually released. When using nets there is also the possibility of being bitten by the bat you capture.
Nets do not offer much protection and bats can easily bite a human through the thin netting if they are too close and the animal is scared.
Traps That Sit On The Ground Are Less Effective
There are traps more similar to those used for raccoons or opossums, however, bats can escape the confines of gravity and fly past such devices. If a bat was to be caught in such a trap it would have to be released which provides another opportunity for negative human and bat interactions.
Poison And Sticky Traps Are Inhumane And Often Illegal
Not only is it illegal to trap bats, but it is often inhumane as there are some bat traps that lead to a slow and painful death for the animal. Bat Poisons and sticky traps are considered to be the worst because they take time and leave dead bats around your house. Even a dead bat can still carry dangerous diseases so removing a dead animal is no safer than removing them alive and the stench of dead bats is not something anyone wants in their home.
Bats Are Important To The Environment So Remove Them Respectfully
It is important to remember that bats are key creatures in the environment. They eat mass quantities of bugs every night which helps keep insect populations in check. You certainly don’t need them in your house, but you do need them in the surrounding area. If you are looking to have bats removed from your home call a wildlife removal company and as soon as they are removed you can examine your home for entry points and try to close those off to prevent the animals from returning. If you are feeling extra kind you can even put up bat houses in the nearby trees to give the bats that are removed from your house a new and safe place to live.
