Can dogs scare away Canada Geese?

When you think of home pests, you don’t tend to think of geese. These big, beautiful birds are usually thought of as cute and relaxing to be around, and while that is mostly true, they can become a nuisance rather quickly, particularly if they’re flocking to your property in large groups.

Canada geese in particular are big and will prevent you from going about your business, not to mention make noise and create a mess on your property.

And while your first impulse will no doubt be to start flailing your arms about, trying to disperse them, you should know that’s actually counter-productive.

Despite what you may think, Canada geese won’t fly away at the first sign of trouble. While some will get scared and scram, most will stand their ground, and probably get aggressive (which is not what you should be going for).

Can my dog scare the geese away?

The short answer is yes, your dog is a natural chaser and will probably stalk the goose or geese that have taken over your property more efficiently than you would. Your dog has a higher chance of scaring the Canada geese away, with some dogs being more effective than others.

What dogs scare Canada geese away?

All dogs chase, that’s a given. But many do so in a playful manner. If you’ve seen a dog going after another dog or even a cat, sometimes, you know they’re usually just teasing, not actually guarding your property.

This is why, if you’re worried about an invasion of geese, you should be considering a herding dog who is used to keeping other animals away, and not just in a playful sort of way.

A German Shepard is a great dog for keeping Canada geese off your property. The German Shepard is a very smart animal and it is very complying. It will do what you want it to do and will take care of your property. You can instruct them to herd geese away, and they will stick to your instructions religiously. Another benefit of having a German Shepard is that it’s a big dog, so it’ll definitely scare the geese off, simply by its size.

A Border Collie is another excellent dog to keep Canada geese away. The Border Collie is bred, by nature, as a herding dog, so it will safely chase geese away. It won’t harm the geese, so that’s good, but it is a very smart creature and one that enjoys good exercise. So chasing geese away will actually be fun for your Collie!

Lastly, an Australian Cattle Dog will do a good job, too. You can see by its name that it’s a cattle dog, so it’s used to herding creatures around, and in this case, away. What’s good about the Australian Cattle Dog is that it’s incredibly persistent. At some point, the geese will fly away out of boredom, if nothing else, just to get away from your dog!
